The Year 2012

Post The Year 2012
A new thread to watch, track the
 2012 predictions by ancient civilizations.

For starters, Mayan calendar 'ends' on Dec 21, 2012 -
and this is being interpreted as the end of
the world as we know it.

Questions that need finding answers..

Is there a problem with 'our' interpretation ?
Is Mayan thought a localized one unlike 'our' globalized interpretation ?
Is it a simple case of inability of Mayans to see beyond their then-prevalent knowledge ?

Time, as we know, doesn't end. It goes 'forward'.
So Dec 21, 2012 will pass like any other dates.

I think movie 2012 just released this week is also on that theme. all disasters.
After reading the critics analysis I thought it would be a boring movie for me.

RM, all calendars have to have an end date, cannot be infinite.
Even in Windows XP shows only until 2099.
In last century nobody planned for year 2000. So all the euphoria about Y2K updates etc.
Similarly, may be Maya calender ran out of papers and finished at 2012.  Laughing

My outlook can set recurrence without an end date Smile

How can a calendar be wrong ?

Maya calendar was not compiled for dates after Dec 21, 2012. Real reason unknown

Speculation is rife mostly because the date signals the end of a calendar "cycle" and the Maya glyphs seem to indicate great changes occur with cycle ends AND an astronomical event of significance supposedly also occurs at that time (something to do with the earth, sun and galactic equator coming into alignment)

Whatever happens, in the interim, the flood of documentaries is VERY interesting and enjoyable

Perhaps I should have said the 2012 prediction based on the calendar is wrong.

Other than that, mayan stuff has been very fascinating and a knowledge base for humanity.

Mayan calendar concepts are deadly accurate.
they correctly got to the number of days in a solar
calendar year and placed that many steps
by their sun temple.

It pains to note that Spanish inquisitions
destroyed a wealth of knowledge.

Yes, Mayans got it right about cycle of change.
Incidentally, the Vedas talk about cycles of
birth and death of stars and all cosmic bodies
in the universe and several eras(yugas) of time ( quoted by Carl Sagan )

It is estimated from various sources that in
2012, some rare alignments happen in
space. Scientists say that such alignments
have already happened and there is nothing
'world-ending' to happen.

Whatever be the accuracy of modern interpretation
at least things like tsunamis and quakes
should be predicted to save lives..
