DISINFECTANTS AND DETERGENTS FOR HOSPITALS AND CAMPS


Staff and Students of the Department of Process and Chemical Engineering of the University of Moratuwa has started a project to manufacture and distribute Chlorine based disinfectants and all purpose detergents to areas affected by Tsunami. These materials are primarily distributed to hospitals and shelters for large scale clean up and disinfection. Thier project proposal can be found here. This team is being led by Dr. Jagath Premachandra of Department of Process and Chemical Engineering of the University of Moratuwa.

Funding for this project was allocated through Dr. Thrishantha Nanayakkara, LAcNet liasion for this project. Further funding will be provided upon request.

Below is a series of updates LAcNet has received from this team:

  1. January 2, 2005 PST: Dr. Jagath Premachandra forwarded the following report through Dr Thrishantha Nanayakkara.

    Dear Dr. Thrishantha Nanayakkara,
    We are writing to inform you about the project carried out by the department of Chemical and Process Engineering. We are preparing disinfectants and detergent of which the particulars are mentioned below.
    Particulars
    Purpose of Usage
    Chlorine Powder
    for water purification
    Chlorine Disinfectant (0.5 % w/w)
    cleaning toilets and infectious areas
    All purpose Detergent
    Cleaning and Washing

    We have already dispatched a load for the usage in affected areas starting from Balapitiya to Galle (in the coastal area). Following quantities were included in the first batch.

    18 Nos. of Chlorine Disinfectant - 20 Liter cans
    200 Packets of 200g Chlorine Powder
    24 Nos. of detergent - 20 Liter cans
    100 Nos. of detergent - 1 Liter bottles

    Another load with approximately the same amounts will be leaving the University of Moratuwa tonight to be used in areas spanning from Galle to Matara. Likewise, we have planned to continue the supply of detergents and disinfectants until the necessity is there in all the disaster stricken areas.

    Note from Dr. Nanayakkara: The department of Chemical Engineering, Uni of Moratuwa has volunteered to do this already. The students are taking these detergents when they leave. I have committed Rs. 50,000 out of LAcNet funds for this project.
